One University, One Debt

one university_one debtThis March, students at UC Davis have launched a multimedia exhibition to bring attention to the issue of student debt.

One Debt consists of two parts — a physical component and a virtual social media component — which play off of One World, One UC Davis, an $81,249 marketing campaign that centers on how UC Davis prepares its students for the real world and how UC Davis prizes itself as a global institution.

But One World, One UC Davis, the students write, “covers over the serious issues facing students in debt who attend and attempt to thrive at UC Davis.”

Using a combination of guerilla art tactics and social media, One Debt parodies both the banners that appear throughout UC Davis by hanging “One University, One Debt” posters, and the website the university created to promote their campaign. In its online component, the “One University, One Debt” website features stories of students in debt, links to articles about student debt, and directives to participate and engage the exhibition through a variety of social media channels.

The students write that One Debt “aims less to mock, than to confront the administration and you, to take action about this growing crisis of student debt.”
