Open public gathering in support of the revolution, Lviv “maidan” on Prosp. Svobody / 19 February 2014, Lviv. Mass meetings and public gatherings began to occur here in November 2013, following the occupation of Independence Square in Kyiv demanding political reform. These meetings from the beginning had the full support of the city administration and the police, which did not attempt to limit freedom of assembly or speech. There were no clashes with authorities on the Lviv “maidan” of any sort. To the contrary, the city erected a large stage equipped with full stage lighting and an arena-like broadcasting system, plus a massive video monitor to carry television and internet news. From January 2014, activities began occurring on the Lviv “maidan” day and night. The continuous stream of events on the Lviv “maidan” and its openness to participants of many political stripes was––and remains––the public face of the democracy movement in Lviv.
